Liza Minnelli
by
Brenda Hajjar
Liza May Minnelli was born on March 12, 1946 in Los Angeles, CA
and was educated at the Sorbonne, Paris and the Herbert Berghof Studio.
The vivacious, multi-talented performer made her screen debut at the age
of two-and-a-half in The Good Old Summertime (1949), starring her mother
Judy Garland, Minnelli established herself as a charismatic, energetic
singer, dancer and actress on the Broadway stage in the 1960's and won
widespread acclaim for her role in the film The Sterile Cuckoo (1969).
Although she emerged as a leading star in her own right with a
sensational performance as Nazi-era Chanteuse Sally Bowles in Bob Fosse's
landmark Cabaret (1972), her career as a whole has been erratic and
hampered by a lack of suitable vehicles. She had a popular hit with the
Dudley Moore comedy, Arthur (1981), and enjoyed enormous success as a
concert performer throughout the 70's and 80's. She is the daughter of
director Vincente Minnelli and has been married to singer Peter Allen,
then film executive Jack Haley, Jr., and since 1979, sculptor Mark Gero.
Brenda ia a featured vocalist with the original cast of Joeys
and Marias Comedy Wedding in Boston. She has performed at Ceasars
Palace in Lake Tahoe, The Comedy Store in L.A. and Palm Springs. she
most recently performed in "Broadway Moments" a benefit for The American
Foundation for AIDS Research at New York University.
